- The 1850 census is an especially valuable one for genealogical research because it enumerates every member of a household rather than just the head of it. So, once you find a member of your family, you'll find information about that person and their entire household. Often referred to as the first modern census, the 1850 census employed improved techniques for collecting information. For the first time, enumerators were provided printed instructions that explained their responsibilities, census procedures, and the intent behind census questions.
