FIRST GENERATION 1. Adam Dewelt, son of Untraced German Dewalds and unknown wives. Born, circa 1700 (?).
In writing a genealogy, one has to start somewhere.
This genealogy is about JOHANN DEWALD who immigrated to the United States in 1843 with his family. We have very carefully documented proof of each of his ancestors back to his grandfather, JOHANN DEVELT who married ANGELA LAUER. At that point the evidence begins to trail off into the mists of time. There are clues as to his parents, but no firm documentation.
it is probable, but not fully documentated, that the earlier JOHANN DEVELT'S father is ADAM DEVELT, born about 1680-94 at or near Konfelt, Germany. Church records for that period appear to be lost, with only records of baptism's remaining. The missing marriage records would have provided confirmation a person named in a marriage record was the son or daughter of specific parents who are also named in birth records.
We know that Adam Dewelt did have a son, JOHANN DEVELT, baptized 05 Nov 1715 at Konfeld. That Johann would have been 29 when Angela Develt, No. 2(i) following, was born in 1744 to Johann Dewald and Angela Lauer While Angela is their first known child, there could be other undiscovered children.
We also know that an Adam Dewelt had another son, Mathias, who married Susanna Barten on 15 Jan 1754; Mathias' marriage record says that Adam was a resident of Rapweiler. Mathias' mother is not named. For a 1754 marriage, Mathias was probably born about 1720-30, in the same general generation as the Johann who married Angela Lauer.
But certain practical factors do work against the hypothesis that Adam is the immigrating Johann's ancestor.
First, classic German naming patterns frequently result in the second oldest female child being of a son (Johann) being named after the son's mother. Here, none of the known daughters are known Gertrude, but perhaps there is one not yet discovered. Second, not only does the name Gertrude not appear as a daughter of Johann and Angels, it is a name which does not seem to appear in later Develt generations.
Hopefully, additional clarification will be forthcoming with additional research in months and years to come.
Adam married Gertrude Schommer, circa 1715 (?). (Author's note: We wish her first name had been Eve so we could say we have traced our Dewald line back to Adam and Eve.)
Presently known children of Adam and Gertrude:
2 i. Johann Dewald. ii. Mathias Dewelt. Born, circa 1725 (?), in Rapweiler, Ger.3. He married Susanna Barth, daughter of Johann Barth and Unknown, 15 Jan 1754, in Losheim, Ger.4. Mathias' mother's name is not indicated on his birth record, but it is tentatively assumed that he is the son of Adam Dewelt and Gertrude Schommer. Nothing further is presently known about the family of Mathias and Susanna Barth.SECOND GENERATION 2. Johann2 Dewald (Adam,1). Born, 5 Nov 1716 (?), in Konfeld, Germany. Died, 5 Dec 1769, in Rappweiler, Ger.6.
Johann is tentatively identified by German genealogy researcher Dr. Werner Verberg in his letters of 28 Mar 1988 and 07 May 1988, as the son of Adam Dewelt and Gertrude Schommer.
Johann and his wife lived at Zwalbach, about 15 mi. NE of Losheim, at least until the 1753 birth of Peter (Petrus in church records). He was quite probably a farmer, judging from the occupation of his son, Mathias, also a farmer. Johann and his family later moved from Zwalbach to Rapweiler according to Mathias' 1784 marriage record identifying his parent's place of residence. Johann and his family then apparently moved from Rapweiler to Weiskirchen.
Johann's place of death is not presently known, but may have been Weiskirchen. He died in 1769 at the relatively young age of 53, perhaps of a contageous illness. He predeceased his wife, Angela, by about three and a half years.
He married Angela Lauer, daughter of Mathias Lauer and Barbara? Anna Maria?, circa 1743, in Rapweiler, Germany7. Born, circa 1720 (?), in Ger. Died, 8 May 1773, in Rappweiler, Ger.7.
Angela had lived at Zwalbach for a time after her marriage which suggests she might have lived at Zwalbach at the time of her marriage.
Church records show that Johann Lawer of Zwalbach was married to Catherina Eichert before 1737; they might have been her parents, but available birth records on their children go back only to 1737.
There is also a baptismal record showing an Angela Lauer, bap. 24 May 1707, daughter of Mathias Lauer and Barbara (last name not stated). There is a third baptismal record showing an Angela Lauer, bap. 17 Oct 1721, daughter of Mathias Lauer and Anna Maria (last name not stated).
Angela's death record says she was 60 when she died in 1773; that would indicate a birth date of 1713. That date does not match the 1707 or 1721 birth dates above. However, women have been known to shave years off their age in later years. If she did, that would suggest the 1707 Angela might be the correct one. There is a problem with that date however; her mother's name was Barbara and none of Angela's known daughters are named Barbara. Further, she would have been 31 when her first known child was born, with 6 children being born after the age of 40, and with her age at 54 when her last child was born in 1767.
There is also a problem with the 1721 date; that Angela's mother was Anna Maria and that name does not appear as a family name until 1767.
The book, "Familienbuch der Pfarrei Losheim" also identifies the following Lauers with Zwalbach connections, some of whom may be related to Angela:
Angela Lauer from Zwalbach, dau. of Johann Lauer, died 29 May 1769. Angela might have been born c. 1700 and might be Angela's mother.
Anna Maria Lauer, from where not stated, married Jakob Weber before 1752; Jakob died in Zwalbach in 1778.
Emanuel Lauer, birth place not stated, married Katharina before 1745. Both died at Awalbach in 1782 and 1783 respectively.
Johann Lauer of Zwalbach died 13 Feb 1788. He married Margaretha Mergen.
Children of Johann and Angela:
i. Angela3 Develt. Born, 17 May 1744. ii. Mathias Develt. Born, 21 Mar 1745/6. iii. Catharina Develt. Born, 3 Mar 1747/8, in Zwalbach?, Ger.8. Catharina's place of birth is unclear, but might be Zwalbach which is shown as her parent's residence on her Catholic church birth record at Losheim. Her parents names are spelled JOANNES DEVELT and ANGELA LAERS. Her godparents are Hubertus and Catharina Birbrauer of Zwalbach; their relationship to her is not known. It might be that Catharina Birbrauer is her maternal grandmother since the eldest daughters are traditionally named for the mother's mother. If that is correct, that Hubertus Birbrauer would be her maternal grandfather. Another possibility is that they are a sister (perhaps older sister) and brother-in-law of Angela Lauer. iv. Margaretha Develt. Born, 3 Mar 1749/0. She might be the Margaretha Diewelt who married Joannis Bost(?) and had a son, Jacobus Bost who d. 121 Aug 1770 at Waldholzbach, Ger. v. Eva Develt. Born, 18 Nov 17514. vi. Petrus Develt. Born, 7 Feb 1753, in Rapweiler?, Ger.9. His place of birth is unclear, but may be Rapweiler which is shown as his parents' residence on his Catholic church birth record at Losheim. His godparents are Petrus Breidt and Angela Weber, both of Zwalbach. vii. Susanna Develt. Born, 1 Nov 1755. 3 viii. Mathias Dewald. ix. Jacob Thebald. Born, 6 Apr 1760, in Mitlosheim, Germany10. Died, 17 Feb 1840, in Scheiden, Germany11. It is tentatively assumed that Jacob is of the same family as Mathias, above; the church birth record identifies his parents as "Joannes Thebald and Angela Lauers." His godparents were Jacobus Knors(?) of Zwalbach and Maria Schomer of Robweiler. Jacob's marriage record is unclear as to his mother's name; the writing is difficult to read. His parent's address is given as Weiskirchen. x. Maria Develt. Born, 25 Jul 1762. xi. Johann Develt. Born, 12 Jan 1765. xii. Maria Develt. Born, 11 Jul 1767.THIRD GENERATION 3. Mathias3 Dewald (Johann,2). Born, 8 Nov 1757, in Mitlosheim, Germany. Died, 11 Feb 1814, in Mitlosheim, Germany. Occupation: Farmer.
Mathias is the ancestor of the authors of this work. He apparently first married at the age of 26. He died at the relatively young age of 56 in 1814 of unknown causes.
He married Magdalena "Helena" Schutz, daughter of Nikolaus Schutz and Anna Maria Boos/Bous, 23 Feb 1784, in Mitlosheim, Germany. Born, 13 Sep 1764, in Mitlosheim, Germany. Died, 20 Feb 1813, in Mitlosheim, Germany.
Magdalena is the daughter of Nikolaus Schutz and Maria Bous/Boos/Bos/Bies, daughter of Laurentii Boos of Reisendall/Rissenthal and Anna Margareta (Thiseler?).
Mathias and Magdalens had 7 sons and 2 daughters. By tradition, the names of the 2 oldest boys follow a naming pattern: the oldest is named for the father's father (Johann Devalt) and the next oldest is named for the mother's father (Nikolaus Schutz). The oldest daughter is traditionally named after the mother's mother; we know her mother only as Maria, but perhaps her mother's full name was Elisabeth Maria. Children:
4 i. Elisabeth4 Dewald. 5 ii. Johann Dewald. iii. Nikolaus Dewald. Born, 11 Mar 1789, in Mitlosheim, Ger.12. Died, 21 Jan 18224. 6 iv. Mathias Dewald. v. Helena Dewald. Born, 26 May 1795, in Mitlosheim, Ger.13. Died, 3 Jun 17984. 7 vi. Michael/Michel Dewald. vii. Matthias Dewald. Born, 26 Dec 1800, in Mitlosheim, Ger.14. Died, 24 Jan 1841, in Mitlosheim, Ger.4. viii. Jacobus Dewald. Born, 20 Oct 1803, in Mitlosheim, Ger.15. Died, 1 May 1804, in Mitlosheim, Ger.16. Godparents wer Jacobus Geller and Regina Muller. ix. Joannes Petri Dewald. Born, 12 Jun 1809, in Mitlosheim, Ger.17. Died, 9 Apr 18164.FOURTH GENERATION 4. Elisabeth4 Dewald (Mathias, 3). Born, 27 Dec 1784, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Died, 17 May 1856, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Elisabeth was the eldest child of Mathias Dewald and Helena Schutz, and one of the only two girls in a family with nine children. Christening records identify her godparents were Elisabetha Koll of Lillingen(?) and Nicolaus Breit(?) of Mitlosheim. Elisabeth married first in 1810 at the age of 26. Her husband died approximately seven to nine years later, leaving her a widow with four children ranging in age from about two to seven. She remaried in 1819 and was the mother of four additional children , all boys. Elisabeth died at Mitlosheim in 1856 at the age of 72 years. She married, first, Peter Hoff, son of Michael Hoff and Anna Franziska Hipsch, 8 Jan 1810. Born, 5 Feb 1786, in Mitlosheim?, Ger.18. Died, before 1820 (?). Children: i. Elisabeth5 Hoff. Born, 18 May 1810, in Mitlosheim, Ger.19. Died, 11 Jan 1815. ii. Michael Hoff. Born, 13 Oct 181120. Died, 21 May 1828. iii. Nicolaus Hoff. Born, 14 Aug 181321. iv. Mathias Hoff. Born, 6 Aug 1824, in Mitlosheim, Ger. ix. Nikolaus Muller. Born, 13 Aug 1830, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Died, 1 Jun 1835.5. Johann4 Dewald (Mathias,3). Born, 4 Oct 1786, in Mitlosheim, Ger.26. Died, after 1862 (?), in Waterville, Waseca, MN. Burial in County Line Cem., Waterville, Waseca, MN27. Immigration: 184328. Occupation: "Ackerer"/Farmer.
The Losheim Church record spells the name "Dewald," the spelling which seems to have been uniformly used thereafter except as to certain descendants in Minnesota and their offspring.
Johann was married twice, with families by each wife. German records indicate that he immigrated to American with 4 other persons whose names are not given. Since his 3 sons, and probably his second wife, accompanied him to America, it appears that the children of his first marriage either remained near Niederlosheim or immigrated separately.
We do not know exactly where he entered the United States, but it seems likely that he initially settled at St. John, IN a short distance south of Chicago. St. John at that time was on the Indian frontier and in the wilderness. It was established by Johann Hack and his wife, Johanna who had immigrated from Losheim parish in 1837. Johann Dewald undoubtedly knew Johann Hack in Losheim, and it is highly likely that Johann Dewald immigrated in 1843 at Hack's suggestion.
The family probably settled initially about 3 miles south of St. John in what is now Ceder Lake. A review of county records shows there were no Deeds in the Dewald name prior to 1854. The absence of an early Deed would suggest that they either squatted on the land, or more likely received title to land from the federal government which in the process of opening up the area.
The first recorded Deed is one dated 25 Jan 1854 in which Mathias Dewald purchased the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 21, T34N R9E from Henry Wells. A second Deed is dated 3 Aug 1854 in which Martin Dewald purchased the adjoining SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of that same Sec. 21 from Jacob Dewald and Barbara Dewald. Those two parcels of land lie on 129th Avenue about a quarter mile east of the main highway and just east of the railroad tracks. The intersection of 129th and Alexander St. forms the SW corner of the property.
The first presently known documentation of their residence appears in the 1850 federal census. It shows, for Centre Township in Lake County, Indiana "John Davolt, age 66, farmer; Jacob Davolt, age 26; Matthias Davolt, age 26, and Matten (probably Martin) Davolt, age 22." Those ages correspond with their birth dates as shown in Losheim church records.
The 1850 Census also shows living at or near St. John families named Cline, Klein, Klien, Schetz, Scheutz, Schuet, Shits, Sheets, Scheetz, Hoof, Moeller, Muller and Boos. It is not presently known if these families are related to Johann and his wife; however the History of St. John identifies at least 3-4 people who can be documented as coming from Losheim as did the Hacks and the Dewalds.
Family tradition has it that it was in the Spring of 1855, that Johann and his sons, MN with its pretty green country with softly rolling hills, woods, and meadows. Nearby are a number of lakes and rivers with ample water for fishing, irrigation, and domestic uses. .p .p It is more likely that the move was in August, 1856. Recorded Deeds show that the St. John land was sold by Mathias and Martin on 7 Aug 1856; it seems unlikely they would have moved such a long distance before their land was sold; they probably needed the money to pay for their new land.
According to family tradition, they took the train from Chicago to Faribault and then walked 10 miles or so to their new homestead. Among the earliest settlers, they settled just south of town where Waseca Co. adjoins La Sueur Co. They built the first house in Waterville Twp, and their holdings straddled the county line.
Johann later acquired land under a federal land grant. By legislation in 1855, Congress authorized deeding of free land to "certain Officers and Soldiers who have engaged in the military service of the Unites States." The land he acquired was 150 acres originally granted to one John F. Patton, a teamster in the War with Mexico. Johann, although not a veteran, purchased it from the veteran. It consisted of 150 ac. in the NE quater of Sec. 4, T 108 N, R 23 W. The deed was dated April 10, 1862, but was not recorded until several years later. Although nominally issued by Abraham Lincoln, it was actually signed by a lower federal officer. The Deed to Johann was under the name JOHN DEWALD, indicating that by 1862 he had Americanized his name.
We do not know for certain how Johann spelled his last name; a Deed dated 3 Nov 1858 from Johann to Paul Dusbabek is signed: "John his x mark Dewald." Such signature would indicate that Johann was unschooled. We do know that in Minnesota the family, or at least some of the members, changed the German "Dewald" to Dawald. Other variations which appear in official documents are Devalt, Davalt, Devolt, Davolt, and Dovolt.
Their names appear in the 1857 territorial census. Perhaps Johann's wife, Maria, moved too; but her name does not appear. The Deed mentioned above show that Johann, aka John, was living in Waterville as late as 1862. By letter of 17 Oct 1995, Leota Dawald, wife of Roman Dawald, advises that he is buried in the County Line Cemetery beside his son, Jacob. However, a plot map and visit to the cemetary did not disclose a headstone for him.
Waterville church authorities say that there were no church records for the Waterville area in the 1860's; there was no church as such and in the early days Mass was held in farm homes with a priest coming monthly. The first Catholic Church in Waterville was built about 1881.
He married, first, Barbara Muller, daughter of Mathias Muller and Maria Anna Glaser, 19 Feb 1811, in Losheim, Ger. Born, 28 Sep 1794, in Niederlosheim, Germany29. Died, 6 Jun 1821 (?), in Losheim, Ger.4. It is likely that Barbara died at or shortly after the birth of her fifth child, Barbara. Children:
i. Maria Anna5 Dewald. Born, 25 Aug 1813, in Niederlosheim, Germany30. Died, after 1840 (?). She married Bernhard Ney, 17 Feb 1840, in Haust., Ger.4. ii. Mathias Dewald. Born, 15 Jun 1815, in Niederlosheim, Germany31. Died, 17 Jul 18164. iii. Susanna Dewald. Born, 30 Mar 1817, in Niederlosheim, Germany32. She married Johann Scherer, 3 Dec 1839, in Brotd., Ger.4. iv. Johann Dewald. Born, 29 Dec 1818, in Niederlosheim, Germany33. He may be the Johann Dewald who immigrated from Niederlosheim to "Amerika" in 1841 as shown on page 41 of the "Drittes Jahrbuch, 1934" provided by Fridolin Hares. v. Barbara Dewald. Born, 18 Feb 1821, in Niederlosheim, Germany34. Died, 16 Dec 1879, in Wahlen, Ger.35. Baptism: Oct 182136.He married, second, Anna Maria Klein, daughter of Mathias Klein and Anna Putz, 7 Jan 1822. Born, circa 1792, in Beurig/Beurich, Ger.37. Died, before 1850 (?), in St. John?, IN.
Anna Maria's place of birth, Beurig, is a small village on the ourskirts of Saarburg, a few miles northwest of Losheim.
Anna Maria was 36 when she married Joannis. Her marriage license describes her as "by profession a maid servent, resident of Beurich," and states that her father, Mathias Klein, was "by profession a farmer, resident of Beurich," and that both of her parents were by that time (1822) deceased. Her age at marriage, 36, suggests she might have been previously married, but such is not indicated by the civil marriage record, nor has any record of a previous marriage been located.
German records indicate that Johann, as a part of a party of 5, immigrated from Germany in 1843. The book, Familienbuch der Pfarrei Losheim, 1831-1890, does not contain a death record reference for her, seeming to indicate that she was a member of the part of 5.
The family next appears in the 1850 Lake Co., Indiana Census dated 16 Aug 1850. It seems likely that Anna Maria died at an unknown date between 1843 and 1850; only Johann and his three sons are mentioned in that 1850 Census. In addition, the family is mentioned in Crown Point, IN records where their sons were married, but she is not specifically mentioned. There is no presently known evidence that she moved with her family to Waterville, MN and no grave has been located for her in the family cemetery at Waterville. She may have died at Crown Point, but no grave has yet been located there either. Children:
9 vi. Jacob Dewald. 10 vii. Mathias Dewald. 11 viii. Mathias "Martin" Dewald. ix. Maria Dewald. Born, 20 Aug 1831, in Niederlosheim, Germany, and d. 6 months later on 29 Feb 1832, in Niederlosheim, Germany.6. Mathias Dewald (Mathias, 3). Born, 26 Apr 1792, in Mitlosheim, Ger.38. Died, 23 Jun 1846, in Mitlosheim, Ger.39.
He married Maria Blos\Blaes, daughter of Mathias Blos and Maria Rosseler(?), 7 Jan 1817, in Losheim, Ger.4. Born, circa 1800 (?). Children:
i. Elisabeth5 Dewald. Born, 3 Feb 1818, in Mitlosheim, Ger.4. Died, 27 Sep 1829, in Mitlosheim, Ger.4. 12 ii. Regina Dewald. 13 iii. Johann Dewald. iv. Helena Dewald. Born, 1 Jun 1826, in Mitlosheim, Ger.40. Died, 6 Sep 1849, in Mitlosheim, Ger.4. v. Maria Dewald. Born, 29 Oct 183041. Maria's mother's maiden surname is spelled "Blos" on Maria's birth record. An assumption is here made that she is the same person as Maria "Blaes." vi. Margaretha Dewald. Born, Sep 183142. vii. Maria Dewald. Born, Sep 183443. viii. Mathias Dewald. Born, Jun 183744.7. Michael/Michel Dewald (Mathias, 3). Born, 21 Jan 1798, in Mitlosheim, Germany 45. He may not have emigrated since he does not appear in the 1850, 1860, 1870 or 1880 census.
He married Regina Breidt/Breit, daughter of Nikolaus Breit and Regina Muller, 14 Feb 1822, in St. A., Weiskirchen, Ger. Born, 2 Apr 1802. Witnesses at the wedding were Joannes Devald of Mitlosheim and Nicolaus Schutz of Losheim. Children:
- Regina Dewald. Born, 7 Jul 1823, in Mitlosheim, Ger.46. Died, 25 Dec 1831 47. It might be assumed that Regina died as a child in or near Mitlosheim in view of the fact that a later sister was also named Regina.
- Johann Peter Dewald. Born, 12 Dec 1825, in Mitlosheim, Ger.48. Died, 30 Dec 1831. Johann could not have accompanied the family when it immigrated to America since he died in Germany at the age of 6.
- Mathias Dewald. Born, 18 Oct 1828, in Mitlosheim, Ger.49. It is unknown if he immigrated to America. He does not appear in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 census.
According to a March 1987 letter from the Allen Co., IN Library, a marriage license was issued for a Mathias Dewald to marry Barbara Kline on 17 August 1869; no subsequent marriage date is shown. He would have been 43 in 1869. According to a 17 Jul 1987 letter from Lucille Krause, Courthouse records at Crown Point show a 07 Jun 1873 marriage for a Mathias Dewald to Barbara Kline. He would have been 47 in 1873.
A Mathias and Anna Dewald served as Godparents at the 14 Jan 1865 Baptism of Mathias Jourdain, son of Regina (Dewald) Jourdain and Michael Jourdain. Was Anna his first wife? Did she die with Mathias thereafter marrying Barbara Kline? Those questions have no presently known answer.
- Margaretha Dewald. Born, 23 Sep 1831, in Mitlosheim, Ger.50. Died, 18 Aug 1832.
- Regina Dewald. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [14]
- Margaretha Dewald. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [15]
- (probably) Nicholas Dewald. Born, after 1836 (?), in Mitlosheim, Ger. Although we have not located a Losheim record of his birth, a Nicholas Dewald acted as Godfather to the birth of Regina Dewald's son, Nicholas, in St. John on 20 May 1861. His wife might be named Mary/Maria; that was the name of the Godmother.
FIFTH GENERATION 8. Mathias Muller. Born, 3 Mar 1822, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Died, 7 May 1903, in Mitlosheim, Ger.
He married Margareta Muller, 7 Dec 1849, in Weiskirchen, Ger. Born, 25 Oct 1826, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Died, 15 Nov 1893, in Mitlosheim, Ger. Margareta is the daughter of Mathias Muller and (unknown) Schneider, and gr. dau. of Michel Muller/Marie Sherer and Mathias Schneider/Katharine Lambert. Children:
16 i. Nikolaus6 Muller.9. Jacob Dewald (Johann, 5). Born, 28 Dec 1822, in Niederlosheim, Germany51. Died, 4 May 1893, in Waterville, Waseca, MN (paralysis). Burial: 6 May 1893, in Co. Line Cem., Waterville, Waseca, MN. Immigration: 1843. Occupation: Farmer.
Jacob's birth records show his Godparents as Jacob Muller of Niederlosheim(?) and Anna Klein of Beurig (probably his maternal grandmother, Anna (Putz) Klein. Jacob moved to Waterville with his parents in 1855 and built the first house in Waterville. He soon acquired a local hotel and saloon near the railroad depot which was built in Waterville near the center of town. Jacob died from paralysis resulting from a stroke.
He married Barbara Bohne, daughter of Nikolaus Bone and Katharina Myers, 19 Feb 1852, in St. John, Lake, IN. Born, 6 Jun 1834, in Waterville, Waseca, MN52. Died, 5 Dec 1907, in Waterville, Waseca, MN53. Burial: 7 Dec 1907, in Co. Line Cem., Waterville, Waseca, MN. Barbara is the daughter of Nickolaus Bohne and Catharina Meiers or Myers. Church Rec. # 81 at Losheim shows a date of July, 1835. She is one of at least 11 children of Nicholaus and Catharina. Her family immigrated to America when she was 6. Children:
17 i. Catherine6 Dawald. 18 ii. Margaret Dawald. 19 iii. Barbara Dawald. 20 iv. Ellen Magdalene Dawald. v. Nicholas Dawald. Born, 29 Oct 1860, in Waterville, Waseca, MN. Died, 29 Apr 1873, age 12. Martin was about 15 when his family immigrated and settled at St. John, IN. In the Spring of 1855, when he was 27, he moved to Waterville, MN with his father, brothers, and possibly his mother. 3 years later, in 1858, he married his 1st wife, Barbara Dusbabek, who bore him 2 sons (Paul and John) and a daughter (Amelia). After Barbara's death, and at 43, Martin married Amelia Gregor and had another son and daughter.
About 1882, at the age of 52, Martin and his family moved to Thayer Co., NE. Deeds dated February and April, 1882 described his farm as shaped like a dog leg to the left: the NE quarter of Sec. 13, the N half of the NW quarter of Sec. 13, and the SW quarter of Sec. 12 immediately above Sec. 13.
Martin became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He died in Hebron at the age of 68.
He married, first, Barbara Dusbabek, daughter of Paul Dusbabek and Mary Hikes, 1858, in Waterville, Waseca, MN. Born, 26 May 1839, in Bohemia. Died, 26 May 1871, in Waterville, Waseca, MN.
Barbara, and her sister Mary who married Mathias Dewald, are daughters of Paul Dusbabek and Mary Hikes. Paul is the son of Frantisek Dusbabek (possibly son of Jan Duzabkova and Elisabetha) and Marie/Magdalena Preclik/Preczlik (daughter of Josef Preclik/Preczlik and Veronica).
Barbara died at the young age of 32, 8 months after the birth of her last child, leaving her husband a widower with 3 young children to rear. Children:
27 i. Paul Dewald. ii. John Peter Dewald. Born, 3 Jul 1865, in Waterville, Waseca, MN 56. Died, 18 Feb 1892, age 26. John probably died at Hebron, Thayer, NE where his family had moved in 1880. 28 iii. Amelia Dewald. He married, second, Amelia Gregor, daughter of Joseph Gregor and Rosalie "Rose" (Hiller) Zeipelt, 15 Aug 1871, in Waterville, Waseca, MN. Born, 29 Nov 1846, in Michelsdorf, Bohemia, Nr. 8157. Died, 8 Jun 1934, in Hebron, Thayer Co., NE. Immigration: 6 Jun 1868, in New York, NY58. Occupation: Housewife.
Amelia is believed to the eldest child of Joseph Gregor by his first wife, Rose Hiller. Her obituary says she was born in Michelsdorf; her Death Certificate says Austria, but Michelsdorf in 1848 was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Amelia's obituary reads as follows:
"She is gone; but ah--not departed. For her memory lives on as the light of the sun that is softly reflected in the moon on a calm, mellow night. Amelia Mary Gregor...died...at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and ten days.
At the age of 20 (c. 1868), she came with friends to America. A passenger roster shows she arrived at the Port of New York on 6 June 1868 aboard the sailing vessel, "Weser." She lived for a time in Wisconsin, later going to Waterville, Minnesota, where she worked for three years, perhaps as a maid or housekeeper.
In 1871 she was united in marriage to Martin Dewald. Martin and Amelia lived on a farm for a number of years, with their three sons and two daughters. On October 18, 1880, they settled on a farm northwest of Hebron. After the death of her husband in 1896, she moved to town, where she has since made her home...The funeral was held at Sacred Heart church on Monday morning, June 11 (1934) at 8:30 o'clock. Rev. Father Broermann officiated and delivered a very touching sermon..."
A granddaughter of Amelia remembers visits to Amelia's home in her later years: Amelia was described as a non-smiling, no-nonsense person; she and her son (Adolph) spoke always in German when she went with her father to visit his mother, Amelia. Children:

Adolph, born at Waterville, MN, moved at the age of 7 in 1880 to a home a short distance NW of Hebron, Thayer Co., NE. As a young man, he was a professional photographer with his own studio at Friend, Saline Co., NE. The home and studio were connected and located a block south of the train depot.
His wedding picture shows him as a trim, handsome man of medium height with dark hair and neatly trimmed moustache. Adolph's family multiplied rapidly: 5 children at Friend in the first 10 years, and 5 more in the next 12 years at O'Neill and Hebron. The financial demands of a family that size necessitated a larger and more stable income than could be obtained from photography. He relinquished his studio in the 1920's and became a representative for a local oil company, though the building housing his studio still bore his name 60 years later.
He was a founding member of the Hebron, NE Knights of Columbus in 1918 and was elected the chapter's first Grand Knight. His son, Ralph, was also one of the original founding members as was his daughter Grace's husband, Leo Wiedel.
Adolph was a courteous, gentle man and good company. In the early 1940's, his family grown, Adolph and his wife moved to Santa Ana, Orange Co., CA where they bought a home on Palm Ave. on the east side of town. After the death of his wife, he remarried. He died of natural causes at his home in 1960 at the age of 88.

Florence was the daughter of Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor winner Joseph Rollin Prentice (son of John Rollin Prentice and Martha Eliz. Eyanson) and Margaret Jane Rooney (dau. of Patrick Rooney and Roseanna Levings, both Irish immigrants from County Down).
Florence's wedding picture shows a pretty 21 year old woman, somewhat taller than average, with long dark hair. She bore cheerfully the demands of rearing 10 children, one of whom (Martin) died as an infant. A few years after her marriage she was described by in-law as an unusually large woman, afflicted with what Grandfather Joseph Prentice said was the "Eyanson Curse": she could get fat on a diet of rainwater!
In the 1930's, when about 60, she broke her hip, causing her permanent confinement to a wheelchair. After moving to Santa Ana, CA where her brothers George and Ed lived, Florence was active in the local social group for the handicapped, the Indoor Sports. The families of her sons Linus and Harold later moved also to Santa Ana. A corncob pipe smoker, she contracted throat cancer. She died in 1946 at the age of 70. Children:

Ralph was the oldest of the ten children of Adolph Joseph Dewald and his wife, Florence. Much of Ralph's life story is contained below in excerpts from his wife's autobiography. He was a farmer who started from scratch and became prosperous over the following 50 years. He had a severe heart attack in 1957 and learned to take things much easier. An Alzheimer's victim, his health gradually deteriorated beginning about 1979 at the age of about 81 years. He passed away at Hebron Memorial Hosp. at the age of 83.
He married Ferne Agnes Cruise, 12 Feb 1923, in Sac. Heart, Hebron, Thayer, NE. Born, 8 Jun 1900 (?), in Hebron, Thayer, NE. Died, 30 Mar 1995, in Hebron, Thayer, NE103. Burial in St. Mary's, Cath. Cem., Alexandria, Thayer, NE.
Fern is the daughter of Michel H. Cruise (son of Patrick and Bridget Flanagan Cruise), of Irish descent, and Viola Beck, dau. of Logan and Rebecca Mitchell Beck. She has written a marvelous autobiography about growing up in a small country town and of life on the farm. As a young lady she worked at the telephone office and later taught school near Gilead, NE. In 1919 she went to work for the Hebron Post Office.
Of her future husband, she writes, "...my occasional dates...became more often during those Post Office years. No bells rang, nor 'Love at first sight' thing. Just the gradual mutual respect and admiration and caring for each other." Four years later they married. They rented 160 acres, acquired two teams of mules, a few hogs, 2 cows, some makeshift machinery, a new Ford Coupe, and a large note at the bank. She writes: "Our water came from the windmill which was close to the house, but soon...Ralph put a big tank in the basement with a pitcher pump in the kitchen. I thought that was heavenly never having to go outdoors for water. Of course (we had no) electricity or bathroom, no telephone."
For the family the 1930's "were very busy years...These were the thirties with poor crops, and poor prices. We heard of difficulties in the cities, no jobs, starvation, young men hitchhiking or riding the railroads looking for work. We didn't suffer, we had our own chickens, eggs, meat, milk."
In later years they acquired additional farms and eventually turned them over to their children, moving to town: Alexandria, NE. By the time she wrote her 1985 autobiography, she had 73 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren!
Ever alert, but frail of body, in June, 1994 Fern injured her hip in a fall. After surgery in Lincoln, she returned to the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron where she later passed away in 1995. Children:
213 i. Fern Joan Dewald. 214 ii. Ralph Joseph Dewald. 215 iii. Benedict "Benny" Patrick Dewald. 216 iv. Patricia Ann Dewald. 217 v. Doris Marie Dewald. 218 vi. Philip Dennis Dewald. 219 vii. In the late 1930's, or perhaps in the early 1940's, Grace moved to San Francisco, CA where she spent the rest of her life. In her later years, Grace was a jewel in the rough. She worked at the Mark Hopkins, St. Francis and the last 20 years at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco as Head Cashier and Food Checker. Grace drank, smoked, swore like a trooper, and had a heart of gold.

Linus Sr. was the fourth of the ten children of Adolph Joseph Dewald and his wife, Florence. Linus was a handsome, friendly man and well liked by everyone who knew him. As a young lad, Linus and his siblings often posed for commecial photos at his father's studio. As a young man, he taught at a one-room country school. He later moved to Lincoln, NE to work for Lincoln Creamery. He met his wife at a dance to which he had escorted another young lady. After his 1926 marriage, both went to work for Lincoln Bakery as route salesmen. He later worked in Lincoln for Goodyear as an accountant.
In 1930, he transferred to Kansas City as an Asst. Store Manager. He soon purchased Lot 64 in Mission, Johnson Co., KS, in a subdivision called Cunningham Highlands. It was a corner lot on the SE corner of Cunningham Road and Ayers Road. The streets were renamed a few years later to Lowell Street and W. 52nd Street. They built a 2-story home.
In 1938, their son, Linus Jr., attended the 1st Grade at South Park Elementary School, 8715 W. 49th Terrace, Shawnee, which was about a mile NW of their home. It abutted Merriam Dr. and was about 2 miles north of the Merriam Elementary School he later attended.
In 1939 they moved to nearby Merriam, also in Johnson County, where they purchased a single story home on on the east side of Wininger Road (later renamed Kessler Lane) 2 doors down from it's intersection with W. 57th Street. Across the street was Merriam Elementary School. In later years the school function was removed to a different location and the building because a Community Center.
In 1942, after the 1941 ourbreak of WW II, the family moved to Albany, CA, to which Dena (Casper) Matous and her husband Carl, earlier had moved. They lived for a short time at 1232 Portland Avenue and later at 705 Spokane Avenue. He was employed as a driver for Key System, the regional transit company.
After the war, in 1946 the family moved to Santa Ana, CA where his parents and brother, Harold, lived. There first home was 1212 S. Parton, then 1018 S. Main St. where they lived behind their business office, and then to 1305 S. Parton Street. In Santa Ana for the next 25 years he operated his own bookkeeping and income tax service. Over the next few years they lived at a home in Tustin, a mobile home on the beach at San Clemente, a home in Santa Ana, and in a mobile home park on Lewis St., Anaheim.
He was active in, and an officer of, the local Knights of Columbus. He died at the age of 67 in 1971 from complications following a brain operation for a blood clot. He came from a fun-loving family and often remarked that "the Dewalds could have fun at a funeral!" They did.
He married Emma Marie Casper, 28 Dec 1926, in Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. Born, 28 Jul 1903. Died, Oct 1989, in Manhasset, L.I., NY. Burial: 18 Oct 1989, in Melrose Abbey, Santa Ana, Orange, CA.
Emma was a second-generation American, daughter of Herman Garrelt Casper and Johanna Folkerts, both of whose parents had immigrated from the Ostfrieland area of northern Germany. Her 1926 wedding picture shows an attractive 23 year old woman.
She was an intelligent woman who had a good head for business. While driving a route for Lincoln Bakery, she firmly told the propriator of one grocery store that if he wanted any of her products, he would have to take all the other competitor's products off the shelf. She got the order. After moving to CA, she obtained a Real Estate Broker's license. While her husband operated the bookkeeping and tax service, she regularly bought and sold real estate.
After her husband's death in 1971, she lived alone until about 1984, at which time she moved to the home of her daughter in Manhassett, Long Island, NY, where she passed away in Oct 1989 at the age of 86 years.
